About Action Nepal

Action Nepal is a non-governmental organization established in 2013 with the primary goal of advancing tobacco control in Nepal. Action Nepal envisions to create Nepal a tobacco-free nation. More specifically, Action Nepal is exclusively working on the effective implementation and enforcement of existing tobacco control laws, introduction and passage of plain packaging policy, advocacy for at least 75% tax on tobacco products, compliance with smoke-free laws, comprehensive TAPS ban and sales ban, prevention of tobacco industry’s inference and CSR activities, and ensuring fulfillment of Nepal’s commitments in international platforms such as WHO.

Furthermore, Action Nepal conducts policy-level research and practices investigative journalism for the development of strong empirical evidence to ensure effective enforcement and implementation of tobacco control laws, expose and discourage tobacco industry interference, and provide technical support to the government in formulating time-tested plans and policies that protect the general public’s health.

At Action Nepal, we closely work in collaboration and partnerships with government organizations, media, civil society, and forums for consumer rights, medical doctors, NGOs, public health departments, colleges, schools, and other institutions for tobacco control in Nepal.

In addition, we understand the significance of following guidelines, principles, and best practices in curbing the tobacco epidemic as recommended by international organizations, such as WHO and The Union. Hence, Action Nepal assists the Nepal government in fulfilling and implementing all the commitments that Nepal has made on international platforms at the global level.

Adding more to this, capacity-building webinars, workshops, seminars, and interaction programs are the part of regular activities of Action Nepal to sensitize all the stakeholders to work collaboratively for ensuring better and more comprehensive implementation of tobacco control laws in Nepal.

Research studies are an integral aspect of Action Nepal, ensuring the quality of work and outcomes. Action Nepal undertakes research in a variety of fields, including public health, health economics, policy formulation, cost analysis of tobacco-related disease diagnosis and treatment, and climate change.

Action Nepal works in a team collaborating and partnerships with Nepal Government, the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), National Health Education, Information, and Communication Center (NHEICC), Health Journalists Forum Nepal (HJFN), Office of Bharatpur Metropolitan City, and The Union. Partner organizations are the core strengths of our institution.
